Lady Richmond Brown 2010

Eight of us made the journey up the M3 to Basingstoke yesterday for the annual Lady Richmond Brown competition.

Six teams took part this year, split into two groups. We had Basingstoke and Andover and the other group was Southampton City & Uni and also Portsmouth.

We lost the first game against Basingstoke 9-5 and drew 4-4 against Andover.

After the Basingstoke - Andover game finished 7-3, we had the same points and goal difference as Andover and moved to a penalty shoot-out which we lost 4-3.

That meant we played Portsmouth for 5th/6th place and emerged comfortable winners after going 3-0 down initially.

The competition was won by hosts Basingstoke who defeated Southampton Uni 5-4 in the final.

In our final game of this Hampshire League season, we defeated the new title holders 6-5 in a closely contested game at Osprey last night.

We had our home game against Southampton City last Sunday.

After going several goals down, we pulled back and took the lead, only to be denied in the
last quarter by two goals from City's two stalwarts.

Christmas Break

Knockout Victory

We travelled to Portsmouth last night to play in the Knockout Cup.

This is a handicapped competition and we started 14 goals down.

Things didn't look too promising as we only had 8 players, were playing in a double deep pool (at least it was only 25m and not the 30m it could have been) and the goals were very small, junior types.

However, we finished the night as 21-14 winners - they didn't score!

Another Win

Sunday's home game against Southampton City resulted in a comfortable win over our old rivals.

The visitors were missing their star player Mark Williams and had a young goalkeeper but caused us some problems, especially with the presence of former Basingstoke player Paul Adams. Fortunately for us he was wrapped for dissent in the second quarter, although we lost Ed Stevens when he was majored out soon afterwards.

Next Hampshire League game is against current leage leaders Southampton Uni at home next Sunday.

The Ladies team are also playing Bridport that night with the 2nds travelling to Southampton Uni on Wednesday.

Win at Basingstoke

We took a young team to Basingstoke and came away with an excellent 8-7 win.

Last Saturday saw the KS3, ladies and juniors travel to Christchurch. We lost the KS3 game and trounced the opposition in the ladies game. I don't yet know the result of the junior game nor the 2nd team game against Sounthampton Uni on Sunday.

Tonight, the 1st team travel to Basingstoke for a Hampshire League fixture.

Next Sunday we have a home game against Southampton City.

Defeats to Christchurch

Home games against visitors Christchurch ended in two defeats.

The first game (KS3) was one-sided for most of the time with the Chrischurch team dominating all aspects. The final score of 13-2 (our two goals coming from Natasha Cain in the final quarter) says it all really.

The next game was a Junior level match and we had high hopes of victory. We started strong and kept the lead throughout the first half. Fading badly in the third, the writing was on the wall and we finished the game as 8-7 losers. Niall Laming scored the majority of our goals.

Ultimately, we performed poorly in both games and Christchurch's teams have showed a marked improvement with some of their junior side now playing for Southampton City or Bournemouth (or both!)

6-6 Draw

The second team held Southampton City 2nds to a 6-6 draw at Osprey last night.

They have another game on Tuesday; away to Bournemouth.

The 1st team are playing Southampton University away on Wednesday night.

4th in League

Our final Division IV weekend at Walsall saw two more wins and it clinched us 4th position in the League, two positions above last year.

Both League winners Swindon and Bristol Uni have been promoted to Div III. Ealing and Otter have both dropped back down to Div IV.

We've now resigned from the League and it's likely that most of the team will be playing under the Exteter name next year.

Basingstoke Disappointment

The latest Div IV weekend resulted in losses in all three games.

By all acounts, we threw away the Saturday game against Cambridge City, the final score being 15-12 in their favour.

Sunday saw more woe. A close game against Bristol Uni saw defeat by two goals at 11-13 and then league leaders Swindon brushed us aside in the final game with a 20-10 victory.

Jaggers also picked up a year's ban on Saturday for majors incurred.

We've dropped to fifth place in the table, though we are unlikely to go lower. Manchester now lead us by one point and they have a game in hand.

The final weekend is the 29th/30th November back up at good old Walsall Gala Baths.

We've got two must win games against Manchester and the RAF to stand any chance of reclaiming fourth place in the final standings. There is a very slight chance that if both Manchester and Cambridge screw up big time we could grab third position but that's fairly unlikely.

Still in 4th Place

The 4th Division IV weekend saw us come away with our league position intact.

We had wins against Grantham and Newcastle and drew 10-10 in a thrilling encounter with Bedford.

The 5th weekend is on the 15th/16th at Basingstoke.

We have a five point advantage over 5th placed Manchester Hawks though they have a game in hand, as do Bristol Uni who are one point ahead in 3rd. Cambridge (in 2nd) are also one point ahead but have played the same number of games as us. We play both Bristol Uni and Cambridge at Basingstoke so it's going to be a tough weekend.

League leaders Swindon Dolphins have probably got the title in the bag with a six point gap over 2nd.

Another Successful Weekend

The third weekend of this year's Div IV campaign saw us take on the two teams we had yet to play so far.

Saturday saw a thrilling 22-20 last gasp win over newcomers Manchaester Hawks with goals from Dan and Ed in the last minute sealing the victory.

Sunday's game was against bottom of the table Royal Air Force and that resulted in a 15-11 win for us.

We've now got 4th place in the table with stats of played 8, won 5, lost 3. The three teams above us in the table (Swindon, Cambridge and Bristol Uni) are the three we've lost to and we play those again on the 5th weekend at Basingstoke in November.

The next (4th) weekend is at Marlborough on the 25th/26th October where we take on Grantham, Newcastle and Bedford.

Three Wins at Pond's Forge

The second weekend of this season's Division 4 campaign saw us take three wins out of three to move us up to a mid table position.

Saturday saw a 21-13 win over Newcastle and then we easily beat Bedford on Sunday morning 20-9. The final game of the weekend was against Grantham and they were finally beaten 15-13.

The next weekend is being held at Walsall on the 11th/12 October and we have just two games, the opponents being Manchester Hawks and the RAF. Manchester will probably be the tougher side to beat.

National League - update

Yesterday's game against Cambridge didn't go according to plan and we lost 17-9.

The first game for today was against newcomers Swindon - that was a closer affair but we threw the game away to lose 16-15.

Bristol Uni are this afternoon's opponents. Hopefully we'll get a result against them to at least leave Sheffield with some points on the table.

The National League team starts this year's campaign up at Ponds Forge, Sheffield this weekend.

We are playing Cambridge on Saturday afternoon and then Swindon and the University of Bristol on Sunday. The Swindon team are new to Division 4 and include a several players from the now defunct Nerton Abbott and Reading teams so they'll be a force to be reckoned with.

Tournament Last Weekend

The first team travelled up to the Army pool at Aldershot last Sunday to play in a tournament there.

In a full size, double deep pool we had games against both the Army and Invicta Marlins and although we lost both, aquitted ourselves well against strong opposition.

The tournament overran and we didn't get to play another game.

Win at Andover

The annual trek up to Andover resulted in an easy 8-2 win for us over the home team. We took probably the strongest team we've had for a while and it payed off.

The game didn't start well, with Andover scoring with a bounce shot from over half-way within the first 30 seconds but after a low scoring first quarter, we pulled away and held them comfortably. Their second goal came in the last quarter from a deflection. Kester pulled off several excellent saves for us including a couple of one-on-ones. The other main highlight was one of their players retiring hurt in the second quarter after receiving a kick to the knackers from Ed.

Full team was Kester Sheppard, Kieron Reeson, Dan Kinsey, Diddy Jones, Matt & Dan White, George Fridd, Craig Bishop, Ian Pigeon, Ed Stevens, Nick Ireland and John Restorick.

Basingstoke Result

We traveled up to Basingstoke last night with a team of just nine for a Hampshire League fixture. Basingstoke of course had a full strength team.

Always tough opponents, Basingstoke started strongly by pressing us all over the pool and before we knew it, we were about four goals down with only half of the first quarter gone.

Dan called a timeout to give us some respite (and a bollocking) and after that we improved no end.

We were always behind for the remainder of the game but performed well in what turned out to be a very enjoyable encounter. The final score was 20-16 but if we'd taken all our chances it might have been closer than that.

Team was Nick Flack in goal with Dan Kinsey, Matt White, Kieron Reeson, Ian Pigeon, James Baker, Nick Ireland, Diddy Jones and Craig Bishop.

Dorset Shield Victory

We played The Army in the Dorset Shiled semi-final on Saturday at Osprey Leisure Centre.

In probably the best team performance we've come up with this year, the game was dominated by us from the start and the final score of 22 - 6 reflected that.

Next Sunday sees us travelling to Basingstoke for the annual Lady Richmond Brown tournament. We won the event last year for the first time and will be hoping to retain the title. Based on current Hampshire League standings, Bournemouth will probably start as favourites and both home team Basingstoke and the experienced Southampton City side will be tough opponents. Rumour also has it that Andover are stronger this year than in recent times - Bournemouth only managed a draw against them a few weeks back.

The Weekend's Games

The Veterans played against the Army at Osprey on Saturday and were comfortable winners against a weaker side than the opposition had mustered a week ago.

On Sunday, we had KS3 and Junior games against Christchurch, again at Osprey. We lost the KS3 game in an exciting match and easily won the Junior game, though the opposition pulled back three goals without reply in the final quarter.

Next Sunday sees a home game for the 2nd team against Bournemouth in the Dorset Cup.

Hampshire League Game

The game last night between our 1st and 2nd teams in a Hampshire League fixture resulted in an overwhelming victory for the 1st team.

7 - 0 up by the end of the first quarter, the result of the game was never in doubt. The 2nd team did manage to get on the score sheet, with good goals from Tom Way in the 2nd and Tom cain in the 4th ensuring a complete whitewash was averted.

Victory Over Army

Playing without an established goalkeeper, we managed to get a 6-7 win against a stronger than normal Army team at Osprey Leisure Centre today.

We went into the final quarter ahead by two goals at 4-6 but they got two goals back quickly and the remainder of the match was a tight affair. We scored what proved to be the winning goal and held on (just!) as they applied pressure in an attempt to equalise.

There were two games at Bridport later this afternoon for KS3 and Juniors - haven't heard the scores yet.

Tomorrow sees our two top teams play each other in the Hampshire League - Bournemouth are providing the referrees.

Close Win Over Frome

On Saturday we played a 'friendly' home game against Frome.

Our team consisted of a mix of 1st and 2nd team players and the match was much less violent than past encounters against them, though one of their players did end up in A&Efor stitches.

We started well and were comfortably ahead for half the game. At the last minute bell, the scores were level at 8-8 but we managed to clinch the game with a last gasp goal with 15 seconds to go.

Hampshire League Defeat

Our defence of the Hampshire League title came unstuck against a strong Bournemouth side last night.

Stokewood Road swimming pool is never a pleasant place to play and we had heard that Bournemouth had a better side this year than in recent times, having already defeated both Southampton University and Basingstoke in their campaign. They had shown signs of a resurgence last year and have managed to keep hold of those players whilst recruiting a few more.

We went behind fairly early on in the first quarter and stayed that way for the entire game. Defending the hole player in the shallow pool cost us numerable majors with Diddy grabbing two in the same number of minutes in the 3rd.

We managed to get within three goals in the 3rd but then faded to a 12-6 defeat.

Our next Hampshire League match is the return fixture at Boscawen on 17th February 2008. If they show up with the same team, then we'll have a difficult game.

Sunday's Results

We had two home games last Sunday against Bridport teams.

The first game was against Bridport Ladies and both sides has full strength teams. The score remained close for the duration with the opposition generally holding a one or two goal lead and it ended that way.

Next game was 2nd team game against Bridport 1sts. Again the opposition had fielded a strong side and at times it looked like that might prevail but we ended up winning an exciting match by one goal.

Hampshire League Victory

Our first game as defending champions took us to Southampton University last night.

Always a difficult team to play against, we took the early initiative and were 3 - 0 up early in the first quarter. They pulled one back and then the next two quarters were untidy affairs where we lost our direction.

Going into the final quarter with a 7 - 3 lead, we put some extra effort in and came away with a 13 - 4 win.

Dorset Shield Defeat

Our first game of the season as defending Dorset Shield holders resulted in a narrow 8 - 7 loss against the Army.

We are playing our 2nd team in the competition this year and they struggled against an older, stronger and much more physical opposition. Coach Ed Stevens led the way as our top scorer and we gave all our team plenty of pool time but the Army gradually pulled back our lead and held out in the final minutes as sustained pressure from us failed to result in a goal.

The next game in the competition is a home fixture against Bridport on the 2nd December.

NWPL Update

The final weekend at Crowborough went more or less according to plan (or at least the things under our control did).

The Saturday game was against the cosmopolitan team of Ealing and when the first quarter finished at 5-5 we almost believed that we could win it. However we were time and again punished by Ealing breaking off us when we lost possession and we showed little innovation in trying to overcome their defence.

The final score was 23-10, the same margin of victory they enjoyed over us at Pond's Forge.

However, with two points already in the bag from the Basingstoke no-show, the weekend's goal was always to beat University of Bristol in the Sunday game and this we duly did with a 10 - 8 victory.

Heading home, we were in fifth place in the league and feeling that the position was secure; Cambridge were one point behind with a game to play but that was against promotion challengers Croydon. Unfortunately we'd forgotten that Cambridge had triumphed 11 - 8 over Croydon when they played at the Walsall weekend and they duly went and defeated them again, this time by just one goal at 9-8. Ex-GB goalie and Cambridge coach Andy Knight saved two penalties in the game.

So we finished our first ever NWPL season with a creditable 6th place, only one point behind Cambridge and five and six points ahead of Newcastle and Basingstoke respectively.

We are definitely entering the competition again in 2008.

Final 2007 National League Weekend

We travel to Crowborough on Saturday for the final games in our first season in the NWPL.

Originally we were scheduled for three games but Basingstoke have withdrawn leaving us with a fixture against Ealing on Saturday followed by a game against University of Bristol on Sunday.

We are currently in 6th place in the League, one point behind Cambridge and one point ahead of Newcastle. The withdrawal of Basingstoke will give us two points automatically - both Cambridge and Newcastle have to play three games each, one of which is against each other. This gives us the possibility of improving to 5th place if we beat Bristol; Ealing will be harder to overcome.

National League Wins

We arrived at the new K2 pool at Crawley with our team at full strength and looking forward to improving our position in the League.

The first game was against Newcastle; they beat us in our earlier encounter at Sheffield and we needed to reverse that result. We started well and kept control of the game from then on - having a full bench enabled us to swim the opposition and we finished with a 12 -5 win.

The second game against Cambridge promised to be a close affair; our previous match had ended in a draw and our first ever National League point. This game was also close but we held the advantage for most of it and clinched the win with another fine goal from Ed in the last couple of minutes to end at 11 - 10.

So, four points from our first two games and we moved ahead of Newcastle in the League and only one point behind Cambridge.

Sunday's game was against the League leaders Birmingham and we genuinely believed we had a chance of a clean sweep of victories. We started well and were 3 - 0 up initially. The second quarter finished with us still ahead at 4 -3 but the opposition began to improve whilst we struggled to convert our chances. We kept ahead until they levelled the score at 6-6 and then took the lead at 6 -7. We pulled back to 7 - 7 but then failed to score for the rest of the game as the Brums put another 4 past us without reply to win 7 - 11. We were disappointed with our performance but at least came away from the weekend with another four points.

We had expected to move back down to 7th position in the League by the time all the games had finished but Hampshire League rivals Basingstoke recorded their first NWPL win this year by beating Newcastle and denying them the points they needed to go back above us in the table.

The final weekend is at Crowborough in three weeks and we have games against Ealing, Bristol University and Basingstoke. Realistically we are probably too weak to beat Ealing, we have a chance against Bristol (who underperformed at Crawley) and we need to/should beat Basingstoke. Depending on how Cambridge and Newcastle also perform, we have a chance of moving up to 5th in the League, which would be a decent enough finish for our first season.

First NWPL Win!

The 3rd NWPL weekend started in the best possible fashion with a 16 - 9 win over Hampshire League rivals Basingstoke on Saturday.

Sunday morning saw us with the daunting prospect of facing Bristol University and we expected the worst to be honest. However, we produced our best form of the weekend and came away beaten but proud with a 9 -12 result.

Buoyed by that performance, we were looking forward to the final game against Croydon (who had already beaten us 16 - 9 in our very first game at Sheffield). Fatigue however got to us in a big way - we'd started the weekend with 10 players and then lost Jaggers to a severe bout of D & V by Sunday morning. We were behind from the start and although we did win the third quarter, finished by losing with the same 7 goal margin as the original game at 13 -6.

Ed Stevens was our high scorer over the three games and Peter Buckland showed great commitment to get to the venue from Leicester, especially on Sunday.

The next weekend is the 20th/21st October at Crawley. We're targeting two wins out of three hopefully and will have a full squad by the looks of things.

National League 2nd Weekend Results

The 2nd weekend of the NWPL saw us gain our first point in the competition.

A 28 - 11 drubbing at the hands of Ealing on Saturday didn't auger well for the next two games and we lost the next fixture against Newcastle on Sunday morning, albeit by only a few goals at 11 - 8.

However, a last minute equaliser from Jason saw us get a 12 - 12 draw and our first point against Cambridge.

Next weekend sees another three matches, this time at Walsall. The first game is against local rivals Basingstoke who have yet to to earn a point. The other games are against Bristol Uni and Croydon.

National League 2nd Weekend

National League Results

Weymouth & Portland's first ever game in the National Water Polo League looked to be going well with a first half lead over Croydon Amphibians but by the final whistle we slumped to a 15-11 defeat.

Croydon's new superstar player scored 7 goals against us (and grabbed another 7 in their other game of the weekend).

The next game against City of Birmingham promised to be a tougher proposition given their league position last year but in the end it was a closer affair ending in a 11-9 defeat for us.

The next NWPL fixtures are at Ponds Forge on the 29th/30th September where we play Cambridge, Ealing and Newcastle. Based on the results so far, the Newcastle game is the one we have the best chance of winning.

Coffee Morning

Val Kinsey has organised a coffee morning this Saturday, 8th September at Easton Methodist Church from 9:30 to 11:30 am.

National League Update

The National League team played two friendlies against Exeter and Newton Abbott on Sunday.

Held at Exeter's pool, the first game against Exeter didn't go too well and we took some time to start playing together as a team. Final score was something like 15 - 11.

The second game against Newton Abbott's national league team was a much different affair and we played very well to only lose by four or five goals. Newton were relegated down to Div III after last season but will probably start this as favourite to win that league.

This coming weekend is the first in the League; Divisions I, III and IV converge at Pond's Forge in Sheffield and our team has games against Croydon on Saturday evening and then Birmingham late Sunday afternoon. Birmingham should be the stronger team, finishing 3rd in Div IV last year whilst Croydon were 6th.

Training Resumes On Sunday

The Dorset Junior Championship cup and medals were presented to the club at the DCASA Gala at Littledown yesterday.

We've also won the Hampshire League, Lady Richmond Brown and Dorset Shield competitions this year which makes this the most succesful year ever for the club under its current name.

Bridport Results

The mini-polo team were outplayed from the start and comprehensively beaten by the Bridport team. Lacking any substitutes, it was tough from the start though we did manage to score a few goals. The team included Tom & Natasha Cain and Hugh and Dervla Ireland.

Despite being short of players, the junior team took the first quarter sustained pressure from the home team well and then started to pull out a lead which the hosts never managed to claw back.

The junior team included Nick Flack, Grant, Niall & Sam Laming, Kelley & Dervla Ireland, Tom Cain, Matt Jones and Luke Studley.

Portsmouth Game Cancelled

Sunday's final Hampshire League fixture has been cancelled by Portsmouth (again) so we've claimed the points and as a result have won the League!

JR is trying to arrange a friendly against Southampton City instead; more details later.

1st team/seniors note that training now starts at 7:45pm with a 1/2 hour swim session taken by Ed Stevens; the ladies team are encouraged to join in too if they wish.

Durham Dumped

Last night's friendly against Durham University (en route to Jersey) resulted in a fairly easy
12 - 7 victory.

Fielding a younger side than usual, the first quarter was tight but then we took the initiative and kept the lead from the second quarter on.

The opposition had a few handy players and a very strong hole man who gave Jonah some problems; we had Matt White in fine form as our hole attacker and he ended up with four goals. Ed Stevens and Niall Laming grabbed three goals each.

Team was Ady Gant in goal (replaced by Luke Studley for the last quarter), Grant, Niall and Aaron Laming, Jack Dow, Dan Farquar, Steve Restorick, Jonah Jones, Ed Stevens, Craig Bishop, Nick Ireland, Dan Kinsey and Matt White.

Win Over Andover

We kept our Hampshire League campaign on course with an 11 - 9 win away at Andover last night; just need to ensure a win over Portsmouth (which shouldn't pose any problems) to clinch the title this year.

We scored first and traded goals in the first quarter before pulling out a lead which the opposition never managed to close.

I'll try and post a more detailed report if I can get my hands on the match sheet.

Ady Gant deputised in goal for the holidaying Martin Rutland and played a blinder.

Rest of the team consisted of Steve & John Restorick, Matt & Dan White, Diddy & Jonah Jones, Ed Stevens, Niall Laming, James Baker, George Fridd, Dan Kinsey and Nick Ireland.

Triumph over Basingstoke

Last night saw the 1st team beat Basingstoke 9-6 to more or less guarantee that we'll win the Hampshire League this year.

We scored first early in the game and kept the lead throughout.

A onslaught against the visitors was planned in the 3rd quarter but instead they pulled their deficit back to just two goals resulting in an exciting final quarter but we held on for a memorable victory.

We have two games left in the League. An away game against Andover on the 4th June and a to be arranged home fixture against Portsmouth (they cancelled the scheduled date).

Basingstoke Game Next Sunday

Another Hampshire League win last night kept our title challenge on course.

We expected a strong Andover team but we were lucky they had a team at all. After a 45 minute delay to the start, we loaned the six players who'd showed the Weymouth & Portland legend John Restorick so we could start. Their final seventh player turned up towards the end of the first quarter, by which time we were 7 - 0 up and never likely to lose the game from that point on.

The visitiors managed a paltry two goals before the final whistle.

Team was Martin Rutland, Steve Restorick, Dan Kinsey, Niall Laming, Nick Ireland, David & Jonah Jones, Matt & Dan White, Ed Stevens and Craig Bishop.

Win at Bridport

Our Dorset Shield campaign maintained momentum with an easy 12 - 2 win away at Bridport.

We took a mixed team of regular 1st team players and the cream of our junior side to face an improved Bridport side with noticeably more younger players than usual.

The home team took an early lead with an opportunistic pass from a minor foul to a player dead centre on goal at 3m but after that initial shock we regained composure and were ahead by the end of the first quarter and remained in front from then on. Bridport grabbed another goal with an outside 5m shot after an exclusion on our pit defender but were prevented from scoring again by an effective tight full bath press.

Team consisted of Ade Gant in goal with Ed Stevens, Dan Kinsey, Steve Restorick, Nick Ireland, Ian Pidgeon, Aaron, Grant & Niall Laming, Tom Way, Dan Farquhar, Jack Dow and James Baker outfield.

Next fixture is a rare home game against Andover on Sunday in the Hampshire League. Always a difficult team to play against up at their pool, they haven't fulfilled our home match for several years but look likely to show this time which might mean they fancy their chances against us.

More Hampshire League Success

The 1st team travelled to West Quay, Southampton last night to take on current Hampshire League title holders Southampton City.

They started strongly and we were two goals down in the first few minutes, the first coming from City lynch pin Mark Williams. Goals were traded for the next two quarters with the home team enjoying numerous man-up opportunities; we amassed 13 major fouls in the game with the hosts only having 3 exclusions.

By the end of the 3rd quarter, we were one goal up at 6-5. Dan was majored out in the final quarter and City had a goal disallowed for a 2m violation. We went to 6-6, then we stretched our lead to 8-6. City scored again to make it 8-7 with 35 seconds remaining but we managed to hold on for a win.

We are now in a strong position in the League. We've two games against Andover to play and a home game against Basingstoke. Southampton City failed to fulfill our home game against them and we'll be claiming the points.

Wins in Hampshire League and Dorset Shield

Two games yesterday.

First opponents were Blandford/Royal Signals in the Dorset Shield competition. With several of their top players absent, they struggled against us and we came out easy winners with a 16 - 3 victory.

The second game of the day promised to be much closer. Our opponents were Dorset rivals Bournemouth who were visiting Boscawen after recent victories over Southampton City and Basingstoke. We were missing recent star recruit Matt McGeehan who's left Dorset for Yorkshire.

We started strongly and took an early lead and kept this throughout the game. Playing a strong press, Bournemouth struggled to find a response and their frustration showed when one of their players was majored out at the end of the 2nd quarter.

Going into the final quarter with a 9 - 2 lead, we probably relaxed slightly and Bournemouth had a mini fightback taking the score to 9 - 4 but we then recovered and ended the game with another two goals to emerge victorious at 11 - 4.

Team was Martin Rutland, Dan Kinsey, Steve & John Restorick, Matt & Dan White, Diddy & Jonah Jones, Nick Ireland, Niall Laming, Ian Pidgeon, George Fridd and top scorer Ed Stevens.

Next game is another tight one away to Southampton City on Tuesday. At the moment we have a very strong position in the league and need to maintain the momentum. Southampton City have already had uncharacteristic defeats against Bournemouth and Basingstoke and will be trying their best to scupper our chances of winning the competition this year.

Victories Last Night

The 2nd and 1st teams travelled to Southampton University last night and emerged victorious.

In the first game, our 2nd team comprehensively defeated the University side; the final score was something like 16 -1.

In the crunch Hampshire League game, the first three quarters saw a very tight contest with the home team never more than a goal in arrears. We had too many majors and were punished by some slack defending as well.

The final quarter saw Southampton wilt and we forged ahead, ending the game with a 12 - 7 win.

The Hampshire League position is very tight; Basingstoke are undefeated and we've only lost one game. Southampton City have lost at least two games and so have the University. Andover beat the university recently and our home game against them on the 25th March should be interesting. Before that though we have two other Hampshire League games to win - a home game against Bournemouth this Sunday and a trip to West Quay to play Southampton City on Tuesday.

National League Fixtures Released

Following our entry to this year's National Water Polo League, we now know the locations and dates of our games.

It kicks off the weekend of 8th/9th September at Ponds Forge, Sheffield and is followed by another weekend at the same venue on the 29th/30th.

The inevitable trip to Walsall is the following weekend, 6th/7th October. Crawley is two weeks later on the 20th/21st and the final weekend of games is at Crowborough (north of Eastbourne) on 10th/11th November.

If we happen to get to the play-offs (rather than win the league!) it'll be on December 15th/16th at a yet to be announced venue.

Lady Richmond Brown Triumph

The Weymouth & Portland National League squad won the Lady Richmond Brown Tournament for the first time today.

We were drawn in the most difficult group, with previous winners and hosts Basingstoke plus current holders Southampton City, as well as Bournemouth.

Our first game was against the team in form, Basingstoke, who currently lead the Hampshire League. We went a goal down very early on but fought back to end up with a 5 -2 victory.

The next game was against the nominally weakest team, Bournemouth. They fought hard and the close game ended with a 3 - 2 win for us.

The final group game was against our nemesis side, Southampton City. Missing their usual goalkeeper, we were level at 1 -1 for most of the game until a man-up goal and then another late in the game gave us a 3 - 1 victory.

Having won the group outright, we played the winners of the other group, Southampton University, for the Cup.

In a tight game against a fit side, we traded goals and were at 2 -2 in the last couple of minutes until we managed a final score to win the game 3 -2.

13 - 6 Win at Bournemouth

The 1st team had a successful trip to Stokewood Road last night with a crucial Hampshire League win over Dorset rivals Bournemouth.

We opened the scoring early in the first quarter and were never headed for the rest of the game.

A poor second quarter was followed by a rally in the third. Going into the final quarter with a 9 - 6 lead, we scored four more times without reply as the hosts faded.
